Raymarine Type 2 Linear Drive Engineering & Drive Logic Analysis
The Raymarine Type 2 Linear Drive provides high-torque mechanical thrust directly to the rudder quadrant for zero-backlash steering performance. Its electromagnetic clutch allows for instantaneous manual helm take-over, while the heavy-duty electric motor handles the immense physical loads of large sailing vessels during long-distance offshore passages.
Strategic for offshore vessels with a maximum displacement of 33,000 lbs requiring 12V mechanical actuation.
Technical Key Features
- Delivers 1060 lbs of mechanical thrust
- Twelve inch maximum stroke piston travel
- Twelve volt DC electromagnetic clutch drive
- Supports vessels up to 33000 lbs
- Peak power consumption of five amps
- Maintains heading within one degree accuracy
- Heavy duty cast aluminum housing construction

Raymarine Type 2 Linear Drive 12V Technical Guide
The Type 2 Linear Drive is a heavy-duty actuator designed for large sailing vessels with a maximum displacement of 44,000 lbs (20,000 kg). It provides massive thrust and fast response times, making it the standard choice for offshore cruising yachts.
This 12V drive requires the high-current ACU-400. Because of the power needed to move a 20-ton vessel's rudder, the ACU-400 is the only actuator control unit in the Evolution range capable of providing the sustained amperage and clutch control required for this motor.
The drive features an integrated magnetic clutch that allows the autopilot to engage and disengage the steering instantly. When in Standby, the clutch is open, adding zero friction to the helm, so you maintain a natural "feel" during manual steering.
While primarily used on sailboats, it can be used on mechanical steering powerboats with a rudder. However, it must be mounted to a dedicated tiller arm on the rudder stock, not directly to a steering cable or an engine's transom bracket.
The Type 2 drive is extremely rugged, but you should seasonally inspect the mounting pin and rod end for wear. Apply a light coating of marine grease to the ball joints to ensure smooth, silent movement and to prevent corrosion in the damp bilge environment.
