Description
Direct Rudder Actuation and High Torque Analysis
Mechanical steering linkages on high-displacement yachts frequently experience cable stretch and manual helm slippage during autopilot engagement. The Octopus 12-Stroke Mounted Linear Drive delivers 1000 pounds of thrust via a 38mm bore piston. This unit is designed for direct mounting to the rudder post or quadrant for absolute control.
The drive integrates with 12V autopilot computers via a dedicated high-current clutch circuit for immediate manual override. A 12-inch stroke length ensures full rudder travel for vessels up to 33,000 pounds displacement. Heavy-duty internal gears and a robust mounting bracket provide long-term durability against mechanical fatigue in heavy following seas.
Strategic Vessel Application
Mandatory for sailing vessels and powerboats up to 33,000 pounds requiring a post-mounted linear drive for direct steering.

Octopus 12" Stroke Mounted Linear Drive (33,000 lbs) Technical Guide
This high-torque linear drive is designed for blue-water sailing yachts up to 60 feet in length or a maximum displacement of 33,000 lbs. The 12-inch stroke provides the necessary leverage to handle large rudder loads in heavy following seas.
The "Mounted" version features an integrated hydraulic pump and reservoir directly attached to the linear actuator. This creates a compact, self-contained unit that eliminates the need for separate hydraulic hoses and external tanks.
The 38mm cylinder bore provides higher thrust force, up to 1,100 lbs. This allows the drive to move heavy rudders with less effort from the motor, translating to lower power consumption and a longer lifespan for the autopilot electronics.
This drive requires a high-current autopilot computer such as the Raymarine ACU-400 or Simrad NAC-3. It operates on 12V DC and features an electromagnetic clutch that must be powered by the computer's clutch output.
This specific drive unit does not come with a built-in sensor. For the precision required on a 60-foot yacht, it is highly recommended to install a standalone rudder feedback unit directly on the rudder quadrant.
