Description
Medium Current VRF and Compass Analysis
Standard autopilot installations are frequently compromised by the mechanical failure of rudder reference units in restricted spaces. The Simrad NAC-2 VRF Core Pack utilizes Virtual Rudder Feedback to calculate position without sensors. This processor supports medium-current drives up to 12 amps.
The package includes a Precision-9 compass for 2-degree heading accuracy and multi-axis motion compensation. Telemetry is distributed via the NMEA 2000 backbone to ensure zero-latency data transfer. The compact processor footprint facilitates installation in dry compartments or consoles.
Strategic Vessel Application
Essential for boats up to 35 feet utilizing medium-capacity hydraulic pumps or linear drive units.

Simrad NAC-2 VRF Core Pack Technical Guide
The NAC-2 is a medium-current autopilot computer optimized for vessels up to 35 feet. It delivers up to 8 Amps of continuous current (16 Amps peak), making it the perfect match for Type 1 hydraulic pumps and low-power mechanical drives. It is widely used in center consoles and mid-sized sailing yachts.
By utilizing Virtual Rudder Feedback, the NAC-2 eliminates the need for mechanical linkages between the engine and a sensor. This is ideal for boats with limited space in the motor well. The system calibrates itself during a brief sea trial, learning the vessel's response to the hydraulic pump's activity to maintain a precise heading.
The Precision-9 provides the NAC-2 with high-speed (20Hz) heading and motion data. This allows the autopilot to make faster and more subtle corrections than traditional fluxgate compasses, leading to a smoother ride and better fuel efficiency. The 9-axis sensor is also used to provide stable heading data for radar overlay on your MFD.
The NAC-2 operates on 12V or 24V DC. It requires a 12-gauge power wire and should be protected by a 20A fuse. Ensure the NMEA 2000 network is powered from a stable 12V source to prevent data drops between the computer and the compass. The NAC-2 is designed for bulkhead mounting in a dry, ventilated location.
Yes, when networked with a Simrad or B&G MFD and a compatible depth transducer, the NAC-2 can automatically steer the boat along a specific depth contour. This feature is highly valued by anglers for trolling along drop-offs or reefs. The "VRF" pack supports all standard Simrad steering patterns.
