Description
Keep radar navigation straightforward on a small boat with the Furuno 1623, a standalone 2.2 kW magnetron radar system with a 15-inch radome and 6-inch monochrome display. Its compact scanner and dedicated controls provide a practical solution for watching nearby traffic, shorelines, and harbor approaches without requiring a multifunction display. Need a basic radar system for coastal running or small-vessel use? The 1623 offers up to 16 NM range scales, automatic rotation-speed selection, guard-zone alarms, and NMEA 0183 navigation-data input.
Key Specifications
- Furuno 1623 standalone 2.2 kW marine radar system.
- 15-inch enclosed radome with a 6-inch monochrome radar display.
- 2.2 kW magnetron radar output.
- Up to 16 NM instrumented range and approximately 25 m minimum range.
- 6.2° horizontal and 25° vertical beamwidth.
- Automatically selected 24, 31, or 41 RPM antenna-rotation speed.
- Guard-zone alarm support; no MARPA/ARPA, Doppler, or dual-range capability.
- NMEA 0183 input for compatible heading and position data.
- 12V/24V DC input, approximately 28W operating draw, 8W standby draw, and a 70-knot wind rating.
- IPX6 antenna protection, IPX5 display protection, approximately 10.1 lb (4.6 kg) antenna weight, and 2.4 lb (1.1 kg) display weight.
Integration
The Furuno 1623 includes a dedicated radar display and does not require a separate MFD for basic operation. NMEA 0183 can provide compatible position and heading information, but the system does not provide modern network radar video, ARPA/MARPA tracking, Doppler target analysis, or dual-range operation.
The 16 NM maximum is an instrumented range and does not guarantee detection of all targets at that distance. Radar performance varies with antenna height, target size, precipitation, sea state, clutter, display settings, nearby structures, and installation quality.
Installation Notes
Mount the 15-inch radome on a rigid, level location with clear rotation and minimal obstruction from masts, antennas, lights, rigging, exhaust, or deck structures. Install the display in a protected helm location where the screen and controls can be used safely. Keep the scanner clear of people and follow Furuno safe-distance and compass-separation guidance.
Use correctly sized 12V/24V wiring, appropriate circuit protection, protected cable routing, and proper grounding. Complete bearing alignment and any NMEA 0183 setup after installation. Radar is a navigation aid and does not replace a proper lookout, safe speed, official charts, or navigation-rule compliance.
Before Ordering
Confirm available radome and display mounting space, 12V/24V power capacity, cable-route suitability, NMEA 0183 heading/GPS data needs, radar clearance, and whether a standalone monochrome radar meets the vessel’s operating requirements before ordering.
