Mechanical Torque and Chain Drive Analysis
Chain-driven steering systems experience significant mechanical backlash and friction during long-range autopilot navigation. The Raymarine Type 1 Rotary Drive mitigates this by providing direct mechanical torque. This unit produces 20 foot-pounds of maximum torque.
The drive integrates with ACU-200 or ACU-400 processors via a dedicated high-current clutch circuit. Internal gear reduction ensures precise rudder movements without excessive electrical consumption. The robust cast metal housing provides long-term protection against internal mechanical component fatigue.
